Our Love for Handles: How to Get a Grip
Clay Studio - $25 Hands-On

There are many different ways to make handles. Mark Issenberg will demonstrate various methods, starting with pulling handles on thrown mugs and altered pitchers. He will show how he uses wooden tools from Mecca to make handles for slab trays, and he will demonstrate throwing handles on the wheel for vases and platters.

John will demonstrate his techniques used to create and decorate wheel thrown pieces, as well as a few hand building tricks to construct unique functional and sculptural vessels in porcelain.

 


Todd Hickerson Textured Glazes
Glass Studio - $25 Hands-On

Todd Hickerson will offer a hands-on workshop featuring Mayco’s new Magma and Mudcrack glazes, along with Cobblestone and Crystal Glazes. These unique textured glazes give cracked or cratered surfaces, that are ideal for sculptural or decorative pottery. The surfaces range from "snakeskin" to "lava rock" textures.

Slip trailing is a beautiful way to add another layer of dimension and detail to functional pottery and sculpture. Stacy Morgan will share her techniques for remedying issues of cracking, peeling or the flattening out of the slip after firing. She will discuss making your own slip, adjusting it properly, application tools, techniques, drying, and firing.

Learn successful application and firing tips in this demonstration workshop focusing on AMACO cone 5-6 Mid-range brushing glazes.  We will discuss glaze layering combinations using Potters Choice, Celadon and Shino glazes to create unique, personalized effects. Attendees will also be introduced to Majolica glaze decorating options at mid-range.

A comparative analysis of Chinese and Japanese ceramic cultures, this presentation shows how ceramic objects fulfill roles beyond the physical realm to serve the larger cultural identity. The comparisons will provoke questions about how we might use ceramics to promote a more connective American visual identity in clay.

Foot Wedging Native Alabama Clay
Bayside Lawn - FREE Feet-On!

Experience Japanese techniques of "foot wedging" using native, unrefined Alabama clay from Mobile Bay. Zach will bring approximately 500lbs of native Alabama clay.  He will demonstrate the technique of foot wedging and will divide participants into different teams to work on a different color or type of clay.  Material additions for strength, beauty or both will be available.

Scratching the Surface
Glass Studio - $25 Hands-On

Gulf Coast Potter Anne Webb will give an introduction to the basics of sgraffito, a traditional decorative technique which involves carving or scratching a pattern through a colored slip to reveal the contrasting clay below. Participants are encouraged to bring tools and images they would like to work from. All skill levels are welcome. Materials will be provided to make two carved tiles.

Explore the plastic properties of porcelain in order to alter it successfully. Ana will show how to move porcelain forms and surfaces to create 3-dimensional effects. Her demo will consist of carving and altering various forms. The last part of the demo will be a presentation of underglaze application techniques for a watercolor-like finish.
